Recap of the past few days

The past few days have been jam packed with no time to blog so get comfortable because this is going to be a long one.
The best part of my week so far was by far Tuesday because MY MOM arrived in Barcelona! Knowing that I’d be seeing my mom in about 2 and a half weeks into my time here has kept me from getting homesick. When I see her before she goes home though…..Let’s just say it’s going to be hard.
Anyways, before I got to see my Mom I had a Spanish Civil War walking tour with my school. We had a lecture from Nuria on Monday on the civil war but to see the spots in Barcelona where it took place was very moving. Our tour guide was very passionate about this war and the effect it had on people living here in Spain. The last location we visited was a school that was an orphanage during the war. During the war, the air raid siren went off and the children and nuns ran into the catacombs for safety. Unfortunately, the orphanage was bombed and the catacombs collapsed. The rescue team made it there in time to begin pulling children and nuns out of the ruins. Another bomb hit minutes after they arrived, killing 42 people; 12 rescue workers and 30 children. Today there are still shrapnel indents in the walls of this building.
My Mommy and I!!!!
After this wonderful, informative tour I made my way to La Sagrada Familia to meet my Mom and Mark for dinner. I did not do a great job of describing which side of La Sagrada Familia to meet on so we both waited on opposite sides for 30 minutes thinking the other person was running late.
Mark and my Mom and our paella!
Once it hit 30 minutes I walked to the other side to see my Mom and Mark waiting there for me. Happily and hungrily walked to find a place to eat. We found a great family place to eat and got some delicious paella. Surprisingly it was my first dish of paella while here in Spain. Towards the end of dinner we all realized how tired we were. Before going home I went to their apartment one, to see it and two, to get the suitcase full of my winter clothes. And marshmallows :)
Wednesday, after my only class of the day (Spanish 2), my Mom and Mark met me at my school so we could go explore Barcelona together. I took them to La Boqueria for lunch. Unfortunately, it was raining so we didn’t walk around Las Ramblas too long. After we headed to see the great view of the square, or rather the circle from the top of the old bull fighting ring that was turned into mall. Then we went to Jaume I so I could show them where the Fire Run was and the art gallery I found last week. They changed some of the pieces but not the four I wanted to show my mom. Thankfully :) We had dinner at a cute little tapas and then of course we got gelato! Then we headed to my apartment so I could show them my place. They also got to meet my roommates. They met Krista and Jennifer earlier in the day but not Anavi. Being the best and sweetest mom ever, she gave us all a gift consisting of fuzzy socks, pencils, and cute straws. As much as it pained me to see them go, it needed to be done as I had homework to do.
Us-ie before we parted ways :(
Today I didn’t get to see them until after my last class of the day at 4:10pm. We only had 2 hours before I left for my Basque country weekend trip with my school. So we got linner. (Lunch and dinner, duh) Once we finished our lovely meal of seafood we headed back to my school so I could join the group for my weekend trip. Saying goodbye to my mom for now was hard but I know I’ll see her in two weeks so it’s okay.
Now I’m on the bus sitting next to my new good friend Tucker. He wants me to play an alien video game but I’m not so sure lol. A little while ago there was a beautiful lighting storm. The lighting against the dark sky was magical.
3 hours of our ride are down and we’re almost to our rest stop. We get a 45 minute bathroom/walk around break.
Update: Bathroom/walk around break is over. To no surprise, the ladies room had an outrageously long line. It was really nice to stretch and walk around outside. But now we’re back on the bus for the last few hours. I think I’m going to take a nap. We shall see if that works out once we arrive.
Update 2.0: I didn’t sleep at first. Tucker got me to play the video game. It was fun except I kept dying as I have never played it before now. I started to feel nauseous so I went to the front to sit next to Marta. Taking deep breaths and keeping my eyes on the horizon, I fell asleep. About an hour later, I woke up feeling much better and headed back to my own seat on the bus. There I fell asleep again accidentally using Tucker's shoulder as my headrest.
We’re now finally to the hotel and in our rooms. I’m rooming with my friend Madi. I am using the pillows on my bed as a backrest and am becoming very jealous of how amazing these pillows are compared to the one dinky pillow I have back in my apartment.
Update 3.0: I've got wifi now! Madi and I got our codes on our way back from breakfast. In a few minutes we are leaving to go explore San Sebastián.
